Originally released as a mini-TV series to accompany the three-album, two-disc set "The Beatles Anthology," this documentary is only part of director Ken Burns's larger project. Even so, historians and avid fans alike will be dazzled by the sheer volume of footage, particularly of the band's early, Liverpool live shows. The documentary's source material is extensive, including live footage and recordings from the band's early days, before they established their own style. In fact, it also features a wide range of live footage, home videos, and archival material from the Beatles-maniacal period that began in 1963 and ended in 1970. The highlight, of course, are the interviews with The Beatles. Featuring "New Beatles Songs," a reworking of two previously unreleased John Lennon songs, and previously unreleased interviews with Lennon, including some of his more pointed comments, this is a comprehensive documentary of the heyday of rock and roll, a genre launched by Elvis Presley and then dramatically expanded by The Beatles. This documentary provides a powerful historical insight into how these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. (Marshall Fine, Amazon.com)
