Introduction
A Mystery Tour of India with the Beatles, Guided by the Director Who Witnessed the Creation of Their Masterpiece, "The White Album"
In 1968, 23-year-old Paul Saltzman visited Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram on the banks of the Ganges River in Northern India, seeking healing from a broken heart. There, he unexpectedly encountered John, Paul, George, and Ringo of the world-famous rock band, The Beatles. While studying meditation there, he captured countless photographs of the miraculous eight days he spent with the Beatles.
Since their debut in 1962, The Beatles have become undisputed rock legends, and even now, more than half a century later, they continue to have a profound cultural impact on the world, transcending musical boundaries. Influenced by Indian music and Eastern philosophy, the Beatles were eventually invited to India by Maharishi, the founder of the Transcendental Meditation movement, where many of the songs on their iconic and renowned album, "The Beatles" (commonly known as "The White Album"), are said to have been written. Director Saltzman's rare photographs, along with images of their female partners at the time, Beach Boys' Mike Love and Donovan, and actor Mia Farrow, unravel the hidden secrets of the Beatles' time in India and the process of their songwriting.
Starring David Lynch (executive producer and actor) and Morgan Freeman (narrator), this film brings together a stellar production team and Beatles associates.
In this film, director Saltzman travels to Rishikesh, India with leading Beatles scholar Mark Lewisohn, revisiting the memorable site, now open to the public as the "Beatles Ashram," and recounting the invaluable moments of creation from his own perspective. The film also explores the real-life "Bungalow Bill," the story behind the creation of "Dear Prudence," dedicated to Mia Farrow's sister Prudence, and a reunion with George's ex-wife, Pattie Boyd, and her sister, Jenny. Also appearing is director David Lynch, one of the film's executive producers and founder of the Transcendental Meditation Foundation. Narrated by actor Morgan Freeman, this documentary offers a glimpse into the Beatles' true nature, revealing rare, never-before-seen photographs and rare interviews with those involved, marking the 60th anniversary of their debut.
