The Y31 Cedric/Gloria, launched in 1987, featured a significantly modern styling with more curves than its predecessor. In addition to the traditional "Brougham" trim level, a new "Gran Turismo" trim level with enhanced sports performance was introduced, targeting a younger, more active demographic rather than the existing conservative group.
The 1989 minor facelift saw significant changes to the exterior, including a major redesign of the rear combination lamps. The VG20DET engine underwent a major evolution, with the addition of an intercooler and the use of premium fuel increasing its maximum output from 185ps to 210ps. It also featured the world's first 5-speed automatic transmission.
