A clamp-on ammeter, also known as a clamp meter, mainly consists of an electromagnetic ammeter and a through-type current transformer. The core of the through-type current transformer is made with a movable opening, forming a clamp shape, hence the name clamp-on ammeter. It is a portable instrument that can directly measure the AC current of a circuit without disconnecting the circuit, making it very convenient for electrical maintenance and widely used.
A clamp meter is an instrument that combines a current transformer and an ammeter, and is an important branch of digital multimeters. Its working principle is the same as that of a current transformer for measuring current. A clamp meter consists of a current transformer and an ammeter. The iron core of the current transformer opens when the lever is squeezed; the wire carrying the current to be measured can pass through the opening in the iron core without being cut. When the lever is released, the iron core closes. The wire carrying the current to be measured through the iron core becomes the primary coil of the current transformer, and the current passing through it induces a current in the secondary coil. This causes the ammeter connected to the secondary coil to show an indication—measuring the current in the circuit being measured.
Initially, clamp meters were used to measure alternating current, but now they also have all the functions of a modern multimeter, capable of measuring AC/DC voltage, current, capacitance, diodes, transistors, resistance, temperature, frequency, etc.
