5. Calibrate your meter
NOTE: Before proceeding with the check of the fall, first calibrate your meter using one of the following methods: Clamp a good spirit level with transverse bubble so that the long surfaces are vertical. Place the magnetic surface of the meter on the vertical surface of the spirit level and adjust the knurled screw of the meter so that the measuring bubble is centered on the 0° mark.
6. With the wheels
After moving the vehicle to a position where the wheels have been removed and the sills are at the same height as when the wheels are switched on, gently lift the wishbone to the same height with a jack as when the wheels are switched on. When the wishbones are at the correct height, simply attach them to the brake disc using the magnetic base on the caliper.
7. With the wheels on
Make sure your vehicle is parked on a flat surface, the tires are inflated to the right pressure and the rear wheels are locked. After removing all the wheel caps, place a straight bar over two flattens of the wheel to stay as close as possible to the 6-hour position. Make sure that there are no dents on the wheel where you place the rod.
8. Track angle
Traction is the inclination of the steering axle from the vertical line to the longitudinal plane (wheel seen from the side). A positive trailing is achieved when the steering axle is tilted upwards towards the vehicle in the side view. Negative trailing is achieved when the steering axle is tilted to the front of the vehicle in the side view at the top.
9. Fall angle
Fall is defined as the inclination of a wheel inwards or outwards upwards relative to the vertical in the center of the wheel in the lateral plane. If the top of the tire tilts inwards towards the center of the vehicle (seen from the front of the vehicle), the tire has a negative fall. If the top of the tire tilts outwards, it has a positive fall.
10. Toes out, toes in
The toe is a measure of how much the front wheels are retracted or extended from a straight line. When the wheels are turned, the toe is positive. When the wheels are extended, the toe is negative. The actual toe size is usually only a fraction of a degree. The purpose of the toe is to ensure that the wheels roll parallel. The toe also serves to compensate for the small deflections of the wheel carrier system that occur when the vehicle rolls forward. Incorrect toe adjustment can lead to premature tire wear and steering instability.
11. Measure trailing angle
The roller angle is the angle between the vertical and the inclination of the kingpin seen from the side of the vehicle. 1) Turn the wheels 20° from the front. The wheel to be measured is the wheel where the front of the tire points away from the vehicle. 2) Place the measuring instrument against the wheel again with a flat surface at an angle of 90° to the wheel spindle and adjust the bubble so that it is broken down by the zero °marking. 3) Turn the wheels 20° in the other direction (total 40°). 4) Do a reading, and this will be your roll angle.
