This is a FineMolds 1/48 scale model kit of the Imperial Japanese Navy Type 98 Land-Based Reconnaissance Aircraft Model 12.
The Navy, impressed by the Army's highly-regarded Type 97 Command Reconnaissance Aircraft, modified its specifications to suit naval standards and officially adopted the Type 98 Land-Based Reconnaissance Aircraft.
It was engaged in various reconnaissance missions (bombing guidance, advance reconnaissance, and weather reconnaissance), which were just as important as combat.
The Model 12 was equipped with the same Sakae engine as the Zero Fighter Type 21 and played an active role in the Philippine air battles that began immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor, including guiding fighter squadrons.
Later, during the New Guinea campaign, it is said to have even performed air combat missions, such as attacking and shooting down formations of B-17 heavy bombers with Type 3 bombs.
This 1/48 scale model kit is the first to feature the Type 3 bombs, along with the aircraft itself, in three dimensions, reproducing them in detail.
