Émile Giffard was a chemist living in Angers (Val de Loire). An inventive and inquisitive connoisseur of all kinds of beverages, he became interested in the healthful and refreshing properties of mint, which led him to invent a pure, clear, and refined white mint liqueur, which he immediately put to the test, offering it to guests at the Grand Hotel as relief from the heatwave. An immediate success, Émile turned the pharmacy into a distillery and named his liqueur Menthe-Pastille, a nod to the tiny peppermint candies that were very popular at the time. Five generations later, the family business still bears the GIFFARD name and proudly maintains the high standards of quality instilled by its original creator.
